What a great looking antique BLUE SPONGEWARE crock, and quite hard-to-find with the original lid, such as this one has in place. There are some very interesting assumptions about these crocks, and some new information has recently come to light. Very oddly, these butter crocks are plentiful in SW Montana, specifically the towns of Deer Lodge, Butte, and Anaconda, Montana. Yet they are RARE to find outside of these areas, and the further out you get, the rarer they become. These crocks are not marked Redwing but are pictured, along with lids, in some of the books on Redwing stoneware. Now it has been suggested by some newly found information, that these crocks were PRISON MADE, in the late 19-r-teens, at the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge, Montana which would explain the large numbers of them being found in this area. The Prison Warden, Frank Conley, very much promoted prison - labor and many Montana work projects were completed with prison labor. (google search "greatfallstribune.com/multimedia/125newsmakers1/conley.html"). It has now been suggested that some type of agreement was made with the Redwing Stoneware Co., sub contracting and training prison inmates in the work of pottery, and that these butter crocks were produced at the prison, with prison labor. In turn, the crocks were turned out very cheaply and used profusely by both small and large local merchants to market their butter in. Yet as with many of he other prison commercial ventures, none of these were long lasting as competing companies complained that it was an unfair labor practice and that other businesses could not compete with prison labor, unions got involved, and the prison labor trend never really got it's feet on the ground. Thus the explanation as to why they show up so exclusively in SW Montana, from Deer Lodge outward. Anyway, back to the listing, these are very nice functional antique crocks, you can keep all kinds of different things in these, in the kitchen = utensils, in the pantry = hard candy, and so on. Its pieces like this that can turn a regular house into a country home and give it that down-home feeling, and this one is a good looker, check it out!
