Also known as Phoebus is the twin brother of Goddess Artemis. He is the son of Supreme God Zeus and the Titan Leto. Zeus fell in love with Titan Leto and mated with her. Hera, unable to punish the unfaithful husband, turned to Leto not allowing her give birth on firm land. Leto, was wondering in search of a place to give birth but no land would accept, fearing the wrath of Hera. A floating desert island which revealed Neptune, named Ortigya, that was not afraid of the wrath of Hera, offered sanctuary. However, as Eileithyia the goddess of successful births was kept on Olympus by Hera, Demetra, Athena and Aphrodite rushed to the aid of Leto but were unable to help with the birth. The three goddesses sent the goddess Iris to Hera in order to convince her to allow the birth, also offering an ornate necklace made by Hephaestus. Hera was convinced, accepted the gift and calmed down, leaving the Eileithyia go to Ortygia. After the huge hassle of Leto, Apollo was born after his twin sister Artemis. Commemorating the birth of the twin gods the island was renamed to Delos (bright). It is said that right after the birth, Themis dripped in mouth of Apollo a few drops of nectar and ambrosia and the baby began to grow with an astounding rate. Within a short time the newborn had become a handsome god. Rightly, the goddesses awed watching his first steps on the island which left shortly afterwards to travel to Olympus. A big celebration was organized for the sake of the twin newborns in which Apollo played the lyre that was just had given to him by Zeus. One of the beasts that Hera unleashed to hunt Leto to her death was the dragon Python with ten hands and four eyes. Losing the track of its prey, the beast was ravaging the area of Delphi destroying buildings and killings humans. Four days after his birth, in order to protect his mother, Apollo begged Hephaestus for a bow and arrows. After receiving them, Apollo cornered Python and killed him in the sacred cave at Delphi, beside the Castalian Spring. This was the spring which emitted vapors causing the oracle at Delphi to give her prophecies For killing the serpent he had to be punished for it, since Python was a child of Gaea. However the thankful residents, built an Oracle and established the Pythian games (games in honor of Apollo).
