Carder controlled the company until Steuben was sold to Corning Glass Works in 1918. After the sale, Carder remained with the company in a top managerial role through 1932. Steuben Gold Aureen Iridescent Glass HistorySteuben's iridescent Gold Aureen was produced from 1904-1930. After first seeing Steuben's Gold Aurene, Louis Comfort Tiffany sued Frederick Carter in 1913 for "stealing" his formula for Tiffany's Gold Favrile. When court proceedings began, Carter agreed to lay his formula side by side Tiffany's in front of the judge. Tiffany refused to show his. Pretrial discovery evidence, however, proved that Steuben's Gold Aureen glass was made by an entirely different process -- nothing close to Tiffany's Gold Favrile. After the Tiffany suit in 1913, Carder insisted that all Steuben pieces were signed with an acid etched, Fleur-de-lis Steuben signature. Such a hallmarked was used from 1913-1932. Signatures can be found engraved on some pre-1932 Gold Aurene pieces and, sometimes, a shape number can be located. For collectors, a Steuben gem. Color: Gold Aureen, Maker: Stueben, Material: Glass
