Fred Davis Mexican lady Brooch | Vintage Sterling Silver | Taxco Mid-Century Mexico

One frequently sees copies of the Fred Davis  brooch, but here we have an authentic signed piece.  Seen on page 29 of "Mexican Silver" by Penny Morrill and Carole Berk, Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 2007, this important, nicely sized figural pin is delightful and an excellent collector's piece.  This brooch is expertly crafted and in excellent condition.  It has a c-clasp, indicating it was crafted earlier in the 1900s; more specifically, "Mexican Silver" indicates the design is circa 1930.

This Taxco brooch is signed with the Fred Davis FD mark, Made in Mexico, and Silver.  This exceptional vintage piece measures 2 3/8" high and 1 1/4" wide.  It weighs 17.4 grams.

Fred Davis was born in the United States in 1880.  He moved to Mexico in 1910 to work in a family business and became enthralled with Mexican native folk art.  Throughout his life in Mexico, Fred Davis traveled widely, creating relationships with many artists and craftspeople.

Over time, Davis worked with silver artisans to develop his jewelry designs.  In some cases, he purchased pieces designed by other Mexican silver masters for his shop.  Fred Davis had exceptionally high standards and drove his artisan partners to elevate their designs and quality.  As a result, Fred Davis marked jewelry as incredibly well made and continues to increase in value.

Fred Davis had a positive impact on the development of the craft industries in Mexico.  He worked with the Mexican government to further the development of native arts and increase the recognition of fine Mexican artisans worldwide.

This brooch was made in Taxco de Alarcon, often just called Taxco.  Taxco is a city located in the Mexican state of Guerrero; it is about 100 miles southwest of Mexico City.  Taxco is an ancient and beautiful city that pre-dates the arrival of the Spanish.  Taxco has a long history with silver, as it was mined there at the time of the Aztecs and used even then to create beautiful jewelry with exceptional craftsmanship.

In the 1700s, the local silver mine prospered and developed a thriving economy and a vibrant city with exceptional architecture.  Many outstanding silver designers and silversmiths have made Taxco their home.  Their designs reflect a mixture of Aztec and other native motifs mixed with mid-20th-century modernism.  Among the notables are William Spratling, Antonio Pineda, Frederick Davis, Hector Aguilar, Los Castillo, Margot de Taxco, and Ysidro Garcia Pina (Maricela).

Vintage jewelry has been worn and may show signs of wear.  Please review the included pictures to examine the piece's condition and dimensions.  Unless noted otherwise, all clasps and fasteners are in good working condition
