Seller: lennox2211 (661) 100%, Location: Pembury, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 192029297568 A very unusual antique brass door knocker – The town seal, from the coat of arms for the Borough of Derby. The backplate is in the shape of a shield or inn sign and has 3 screw holes. The words Derby - Borough Arms are impressed at the top of the shield. At the longest and widest points it measures approx. 7.5cm x 6.6cm. This may be a bedroom door knocker which came into use because many people did not or could not afford locks for doors and their valuables would be kept in a locked box or chest and kept safely in a bedroom. I have not polished this knocker as it has a beautiful old patina, which I think is charming. Signs of wear commensurate with age and use - please see the photos. Thank you for viewing my listing. ***Historical information***There is a central stag ‘couchant’ enclosed by palings in a circular space or ‘park’, with trees in the background. The stag has special significance for Derbyshire. Deer are closely associated with the county, founded by Danish invaders of the ninth century, who named their first fort, Derby, for the wild deer that were so abundant in the area. Condition: Antique brass door knocker - unpolished age patina. Signs of wear commensurate with age and use., Type: Door Bells/ Knockers, Style: Coat of Arms, Material: Brass
