The history of chess can be traced back 1,500 years to India, but when it first arrived in Europe, it was a game played by nobility and the upper classes. Its popularity quickly spread through books, newspapers and tournaments as a pastime reserved primarily for men in the 18th and 19th centuries. The chess pieces themselves were often hand-carved from rare woods, minerals and ivory. During its heyday, most of the boards in estates and country houses were inset within tables.

Many of the boards, such as this one, were hand-made. This handsome piece is considered a treen one. The individual squares were fashioned from mahogany and oak and fit into a mahogany frame. The board’s hand-made nature is easily seen. The end result of this type of woodworking is both charming and esthetically pleasing, whether used for its original purpose or as a hangable work of art. ("Treen” is an Old English word for wood, and today it refers to small, functional and hand-made wooden items that were used for objects for the table, kitchen, personal use, and games. Merriam-Webster notes that the term was not a part of everyday use until 1927.)

It is in excellent condition for its age and original purpose. There is a small amount of expected, older surface scratching. The colors of the woods have deepened with age; it has a beautiful and lustrous patina from years of polishing.

It measures 10-¼ inches square.

Personal and cashier’s checks also accepted.    Please contact for international shipping rates, as well as to Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. territories.
