למזמור מיוחסת חשיבות רבה בקבלה. על שום היותו סימטרי, בן שבעה פסוקים, ועל שום ההרמזים שבו המקבילים לברכת כהנים, ערכו אותו המקובלים בצורת מנורת שבעת הקנים שהודלקה בבית המקדש. המקובלים שיבחו את האומר מזמור זה ומשווה לנגד עיניו את צורת המנורה.


המסורת היהודית מציינת שכאשר דוד המלך היה יוצא למלחמותיו, הוא היה נושא עמו מגן ייחודי אשר עליו היה חרוט מזמור זה. צורת המגן כשלעצמו היה מסוגנן בצורה המוכרת לנו היום בתור מגן דוד
