Please note that this item has not been tested and is being sold in as found and as is condition. We are unsure as to how complete this item is though it does appear to have most if not all of its components still intact. We believe this item to be an early uncommon antique gas fireplace insert/surround that comes with what looks like an iron water log-type heating unit. The item has a manufacturer’s nameplate attached to it that reads as follows: THE BACKUS HEATER & FOUNDRY CO. INC. MANUFACTURERS. BRANDON VERMONT. There is also another nameplate behind/underneath the iron log heater component that appears to have patent numbers and some wording, though it is hard to make out due to the age/wear. According to the Volume 92 of “Sanitary and Heating Age” from 1919, “The 1919 catalog of the Backus Heater & Foundry Co., 63 Canal Street, Boston, Mass., with foundry in Brandon, Vt., shows the Backus heater first manufactured 30 or 40 years ago, and of which there are said to be 65,000 in use in the United States today. The Backus heater consists primarily of a gas furnace which burns against a water log or chamber in which steam is generated to circulate through the upper heating surface for the condensation to be returned so that it is a self-contained steam heating apparatus. Practically presented as an attractive open fire and adapted for use wherever heat is required. In addition to the catalog there is a pamphlet of several pages giving testimonial letters from those who have used it.” We are unsure as to how old this item is but judging from this excerpt and the item’s style we are guessing that it dates somewhere between the 1880s and early 1900s. The entire item looks to be made of cast iron and is beautifully designed throughout in an elegant floral pattern. The central lyre design is framed by spiraling floral sprigs that weave across the top and down the sides. A heavily designed column or pillar is set to either side of the opening and each has what appears to be the head of a gargoyle or cat. It really is a striking piece. The item is very heavy with an estimated weight of 100 to 125 pounds. The item looks to be free of any cracks or repairs and is solid throughout. It is in fair shape but does have wear, fading, scratches, nicks, dings, discoloration, some rust, dirty and/or dusty areas, and areas that have what looks like old paint spots/splatter. The top of the surround also has some bending (see pictures). The item is fairly large and measures roughly 31 1/8” across the face from corner to corner and roughly 30 1/2” in height. It is roughly 7” from the back to the front of the hooded component. The item has what looks like a pressure relief-type knob on its face in the upper right hand corner as well as a gas valve knob located near the iron log component. This rare antique Backus Heater & Foundry gas fireplace insert/surround is sure to be a nice addition to your collection or home.
