Known by several names. -This wooden delight is handmade. Wood is old and in terrific shape. We leave our pieces as we find them for you so you can either leave it rustic or change the wood with polish. Please see the wood under the metal insert for ashes and the picture for the bottom of the piece. -The Brass Handle is like an English Marking. Most American ones of this age have no handles or the entire piece is made of metal. They are pretty as well. What does this Coal Hog Ash Bin do?Normally a scuttle of coal is brought to the room and then it fills this gorgeous piece for sale. The coal is placed when needed inside the fireplace. The shovel would be used to scrape the ashes into the removable metal liner to be taken out for the ash barrel or whatever they used. Ashes could be made into soap and other items. This is an heirloom quality piece! This coal bin measures in at 12 x 15 x 12 and weighs 10 lb. 11 oz. Look at all of the pictures and read the condition description, as well. We are selling an everyday piece: The Coal Bin or Scuttle that brought the coal inside for the fireplaces and out with the scoop to place them in the Bin's metal. This is a fantastic aged antique household piece for the wealthier homes that could afford more than a metal scuttle bucket. There are a few dings or use marks in the wood. The brass handle is gorgeous. There is a bracket on the back of all coal bins for the scoops. The holder is there and strong. The shovel for the coal and ash has a porcelain handle but the metal scoop has a small tear in it. Kept it in because it is originally from this piece. The lid raises up and rests on the brass handle if you look just above the wood knob you can see the mark it made. There is a bump in the door with a slight scrape in the wood. The metal coal bin that comes out is in great condition just missing a small handle., Color: Dark Wood Tone, Maker: Not Marked, Material: wood, tin and brass, Handmade Coal Bin: From England, Brass Handle on top: This one is org. and curved, Measurements & Weight: 12 x 15 x 12 10 lb. 11 oz., Downtown Abbey from PBS: Uses these coal shuttles
