The Pyramid of the Sun

Mexico City, Mexico

This remarkable, former museum owned, Pre-Columbian statue was made approximately 1,500 years ago by a Teotihuacan artist just outside of what is now Mexico City, Mexico.  It is 6.8" tall x 1.63" wide (185 mm tall x 83 mm wide) at the widest point.  It has a museum marking number of “100” that was painted with black ink on the lower left-hand side of piece (see photos 4 & 10) when it was collected by archeologists almost 100 years ago.

I GUARANTEE that this pre-Columbian Statue is authentic and it comes with a Museum COA label dated March 1934 that states when and where it was found by archeologists.  If your looking for the best pre-Colombian artifact on eBay, then look no further!  This pre-Columbian statue is the real thing!  No fakes!  No reproductions!  Just 100% authentic and genuine!

eBay Note

This Meso-A merican Artifact was legally collected by museum archaeologists in 1934 and has been in my personal collection since 1972.

It was purchased from the Field Museum in Chicago. IL, as part of a lot that was decommissioned by the museum at that time.

Museums sometimes sell off or "deaccession" items to purchase other treasures that will enhance their collection.

Details

On the reverse of the statue, is a museum tag with a red border (see photos # 6-7, which is also a type of COA) with the following description from the museum archaeologist who located this treasure.  His small, cursive description is by fountain pen using period correct brown ink:

From the Vicinity of the Pyramid of the Sun.

Mexico

March 1934

The statue still has the traces of the original red pigment that highlighted this God in some of the recessed areas of the statue--see 4x macro photos # 4-11.  It also has a hole right in the center of the piece at about chest level.  I purchased this statue in about 1972 from an antiquities dealer in Wisconsin who had bought hundreds of decommissioned items from a prominent museum, the Field Museum, that has a wonderful pre-Columbian collection.  It has been the centerpiece of my pre-Columbian collection for 40 years.

The Teotihuacán are one of Mexico’s most mysterious cultures. Because they disappeared before the Spanish arrived, there is no documentation from the Spaniards about their culture. Even the Aztecs in nearby Tenochtitlan knew little about them because their culture arrived so much later than the disappearance of the Teotihuacán people.

As many of you know, Teotihuacan is an enormous  site in the Basin of Mexico , containing some of the largest pyramidal structures built in the pre-Columbia Americas. Apart from the pyramidal structures, Teotihuacan is also known for its large residential complexes, the Avenue of the Dead, and of course the Pyramid of the Sun, which is where this amazing treasure was found after being buried for over 1,500 years!

At its zenith in about 400 AD,  Teotihuacan was the largest city in the pre-Columbia Americas . At this time, experts estimate it may have had more than 200,000 inhabitants, placing it among the largest cities of the world in this period. The civilization and cultural complex associated with the site is also referred to as Teotihuacan or Teotihuacano.

The Sun Pyramid was extensively excavated in the first decade of this century by Leopordo Batres. Since that time, two tunnels have been excavated into the core of the pyramid, providing more information about its chronology and substructure.
