Seller: wear-the-past (1,930) 99.7%, Location: Salisbury, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 371794422590 This is an ancient Roman silver and gold finger ring, dating to the 3rd century A.D. The ring is decorated with a medallic portrait of Sol ( Helios the sun god) with applied gold sheet. The portrait is front facing, with his rays emanating in a radiate nimbus. The edge is decorated with punched dots, this would have once retained the gold plaque in a beaded border. Facing portraits of Sol became popular during the Severan dynasty onward, they are usually found associated with the Mithraic mystery religion (with portraits or Sol accompanying Mithra). The ring is a nice example, with a clear portrait beneath the gold foiling. It is solid and can still be worn again today, with care and consideration.OBJECT: Finger RingCULTURE: RomanDATE: c. 3rd century A.D.MATERIAL: Silver & GoldRING SIZE: 8 1/4 (US) Q 1/2 (UK)SIZE: 20.12mm x 24.08mm x 15.91mmWEIGHT: 7.7 gramsThis item is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described.
