Seller: wear-the-past (1,930) 99.7%, Location: Salisbury, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 371785916456 This is an ancient Roman hardstone cameo of Apollo, dating to the 1st century B.C. This gem is made from two layered agate, the lower translucent layer is citrine coloured with a crystalline structure. The upper white layer is cut with a portrait, in high relief. Originally this gem was thought to be Roman glass cameo, several experts have confirmed it to be hardstone. The gem is in excavated condition, with chips the the side, due to extreme cold temperature which causes crystalline fractures as in the photographs below. This doesn't occur on glass, it is a classic trait of flints and agates. Originally this cameo would have been mounted into a Roman gold finger ring, worn for devine favour from Apollo as healer and protector from evil.OBJECT: CameoCULTURE: RomanDATE: c. 1st century B.C.MATERIAL: AgateSIZE: 9.74mm x 6.56mm x 4.59mmWEIGHT: 0.4gThis item is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described.
