Seller: wear-the-past (1,930) 99.7%, Location: Salisbury, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 371786944589 This is an ancient Roman silver intaglio ring, dating to the 3rd - 4th century A.D. The ring is set with its original orange carnelian intaglio, cut with a figure of a standing bird. The shoulders are decorated with a band of crosshatching - similar to a net. I feel this ring is early Christian, the bird or fish symbol were used in place of pagan deities. As early as the 3rd century A.D. St Clement of Alexandria, who disapproved of luxury and immortality, had declared that the only ring acceptable to Christians was the signet. This was for practical purposes; woman, being the house-keepers, needed rings 'for sealing [i.e. locking] things that have to be kept safe in the house'. Men should only wear the signet on the little finger, at its root, so that it will not very easily fall off, 'being guarded by the large knot of the joint'. He recommended that devices should express love of peace and sober living. The bird could in this instance represent a dove, the 'net' around the band allude to the 'fishers of men'. It is an interesting and simple Roman ring, that has evidence of at least one resizing in the past. The upper bezel tightly rubbed over still containing the gem.OBJECT: Intaglio RingCULTURE: RomanDATE: c. 3rd century A.D.MATERIAL: Silver & CarnelianRING SIZE: 7 (US) O (UK)SIZE: 22.34mm x 19.88mm x 8.92mm (intaglio 8.31mm x 6.32mm)WEIGHT: 2.2 gramsPROVENANCE: ex. private collection.
