Seller: wear-the-past (1,914) 100%, Location: Salisbury, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 371785916445 This is an ancient Roman amethyst intaglio, dating to the 1st - 3rd century A.D. The intaglio is cut with a representation of a bearded male head, lacking any divine attributes to firmly identify with a god. The hair is simply cut with linear strokes without a laurel wreath or headband, this may indicate this gem depicts an idealized portrait of the original owner, rather than an emperor or hero. The facial expression is very Celtic (Barbarian to the Romans) but being cut on purple amethyst would distinguish the rank or occupation with royalty. The gem is very well cut and would have once been set into a gold finger ring, amethyst being a very special gemstone for intaglios. Today one can have this ancient intaglio remounted for contemporary wear, or add as an excellent example to your collection.OBJECT: IntaglioCULTURE: RomanDATE: c. 1st - 3rd century A.D.MATERIAL: AmethystSIZE: 8.82mm x 3.61mmWEIGHT: 0.5gThis item is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described.
