Seller: wear-the-past (1,914) 100%, Location: Salisbury, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 371786170462 This is a great looking ancient Roman carnelian gem intaglio, dating to the 1st - 2nd century A.D. The intaglio is simply cut on a very small ring stone gem, despite the size the Gemmarius has managed to fit a lively animated scene. Here we see Minerva (Greek Athena) goddess of war, wisdom and healing, striding to battle with her serpent (associated with healing) bolting ahead from her billowing chiton. She carries her round (Spartan type) shield hung on a spear over her shoulder. The work is well accomplished on a small gem, originally mounted into a silver or gold finger ring. This intaglio would have acted as a private signature, to authenticate letters and documents. Today this ancient intaglio has survived intact for some two thousand years, ideal to be mounted into a gold signet ring today.OBJECT: IntaglioCULTURE: RomanDATE: c. 1st - 2nd century A.D.MATERIAL: CarnelianSIZE: 9.33mm x 8.13mm x 2.43mmWEIGHT: 0.3gThis item is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described.
