Seller: auntiejosattic (434) 100%, Location: Prescott, Arizona, Ships to: US, Item: 162268028179 Several ancient Pre-Colombian/Pre-Incan civilizations lived along the southern Manabi coast of Ecuador. Spindle whorls were a vital part of ancient life, as they were necessary tools in the production of clothing and fine textiles for trade. They acted as a weight which steadied the spindle that made thread from Alpaca wool, cotton, and Vicuna wool, a type of small camel. These 36 whorls were created from the black clay found in this region, and each whorl was skillfully hand carved with a bird, frog, fish, turtle, or other ancient design. They are in fantastic condition, which is remarkable considering they date from about 200 B.C. to 500 A.D. The whorls were made into a 26.5" necklace with brass spacer beads placed between them. Each whorl is an ancient artifact that can be worn as a fascinating necklace. It is a glimpse into the lives of a civilization long gone. The whorls were obtained by a technician aboard the famous hospital ship, HOPE, in the early 1960's when providing medical care in Ecuador.
