Of classic form, the piriform body sits upon a disc base, with a strap handle and tall neck flaring gracefully into a trumpet mouth, the shoulders decorated with a black starburst motif. The central register with a procession scene, a lady is shown standing on a chariot pulled by a series of horses, she is accompanied by another figure who urges the animals on. This is most likely depicting Ariadne driven by Aphrodite to join Dionysos for their wedding after Theseus had abandoned her, a favoured subject of the Haimon painter. The Haimon painter, one of the last artists to work in the black-figure technique, is known for his hasty application of pigment. However his speed works well here, there is something of the rapidity of his work reflected in the scene itself, seemingly driving the chariot forwards. Height: 7 inches. Condition: Reattached at the neck with minor restoration. Provenance: Ex. Lohrey collection, Frankfurt, Germany. A prominent collector of ancient ceramics, rather than focusing on one particular culture Mr. Lohrey went after only the best examples from across antiquity. Buying throughout the 1980’s – 1990’s, with his keen eye Lohrey formed one of the leading German collections of its type.
