Seller: summer-house (724) 100%, Location: Ashburnham, Massachusetts, Ships to: Free Local Pickup, Item: 260388925957 SEE OTHER ITEMS Antique Revolving Conservatory Stand This Late Victorian period (ca. 1870-1910) wrought iron revolving stand was intended to hold flowerpots in a conservatory or sun room built on to the south side of a fine house. It is absolutely an antique piece, of the period, not a more recent reproduction. Overall, the stand is 43 inches tall and 38 inches in diameter at the widest point. The strap iron is 1/8" thick and 1/2" wide, and the construction is primarily by rivets, with just a few machine screws and square nuts at various joints. The stand is in three pieces, the base and shaft are in one unit; the shaft made of forged iron, flanged to be wider at the top to discourage wobbling, and the base of strap iron. The shelf unit is all made of strap iron with rod iron braces, on a central iron pipe. The third piece is a brass or bronze bushing at the base of the shaft, on which the shelf unit rides. The individual shelves are graduated in size: the bottom is 38 inches in diameter and 7 inches deep, the middle is 22-1/2 inches in diameter and 6-1/2 inches deep, and the top is 10 inches in diameter. There are no structural defects at all; it's built like a battleship, literally. Most recently used outside, there are numerous spots of paint loss and accompanying light surface rust on the bare metal spots-- nothing serious, but the piece deserves a proper repaint or powder coat finish. (I can arrange for it to be soda blasted and professionally powder coated by a nearby shop; email me for the details.) The form dates back at least to ca. 1800 (George III) when wrought iron flower stands were to be found in the conservatories of fine English country houses. Very few period pieces, even these later Victorian period examples, have survived to this day, victims of the numerous scrap metal drives of the World Wars I and II years.
