Seller: deepsouthc (818) 100%, Location: Montgomery, Alabama, Ships to: Free Local Pickup, Item: 252009623910 Handsome ANTIQUE Iron Mantle Fireplace Fireback Arched panel with Coat of Arms Sun design Very heavy and unusual piece Originally, iron firebacks were used to reflect heat from the fire, and they were placed at the back firewall - but today they can be used for all sorts of architectural display. This mantle FIREBACK panel with a handsome Arched top.came out of a very old 1800s Southern Home in Montgomery Alabama. It was then installed in my parent's home for 60 years, but when I sold house, I removed it and have it ready for pickup. As you can see from mantle photo- it looked grand installed inside the fireplace. MEASUREMENTS - Approximately 28 5/8 " TALL x 22" WIDE OUTSIDE DIMENSION- arched top architectural iron piece/ This fireplace panel has an exquisite majestic style. BEAUTIFULLY DETAILED HANDSOME HIGH RELIEF 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This panel is of a large sun and fleur de lis emblems-- classical in design. In a very rich and dark patina. This one is wonderful with nice accents . There is strong definition in the modelling –exceptionally fine. The lines are flowing and great detail with high relief- a very heavy piece. DATE: The date I have first thought it to be is from the mid 19th century, but as I look through inventories of Antique Firebacks, this one could be much earlier.I found one at a gallery from mid 1700's with a similar crown and fleur de lis. I have priced it reasonably until I can verify its date with an appraisal. Im on vacation in Mexico , but on my return I plan to search for a date on the fireback and have it appraised , and then the price may easily double.Though I am not certain, this might very well be a Louis XIV piece. Perhaps even from a royal palace or estate. Louis XIV was known as the "Sun King." He chose as his emblem a "sun in its glory" (basically a smiling sun with rays of light emitting from it) to represent the splendor of his court at Versailles. The royal arms of France are a blue field with three gold fleur-de-lis. If this is a Louis XIV piece, it would date to the late 17th / early 18th century. IMAGERY AND PROVENANCE: I am not a fireback Specialist, but it appears that the imagery on the fireback is on the traditional arms of France, with the three Fleur de lis below. Hundreds of years ago,France began to use as part of its heraldry the three fleurs-de-lis. THIS PIECE HAS A BAROQUE FEEL WITH THIS IMPRESSIVE HIGH RELIEF CROWN/COAT OF ARMS - PROBABLY FRENCH . (see photo of French fleur de lis emblem)AS FOR AGE I AM THINKING IT IS OLDER . I read that often the date when it was made was placed on the fireback, and sometimes the initials, but I did not see any initials, although I did not examine it with scrutiny. The Gargoyle at bottom guards the home, and the Majestic Sun radiates heat inside. This FIREBACK panel was one part of this Southern Antique collector's possessions , who as modern times crept in and the old Homes were destroyed back in the 1920's- 1950'd, he made sure these architecturals were carefully salvaged and stored in for more than half of a century. The 1965 Newspaper article said."Maybe the collector didn’t even remember where it was stored or why he had saved it all those years. Maybe just because he liked it , with no use in mind. But the fact remains that, in depths of the Great Depression when the decorative features of razed residences might be had, at least, for carting them away at most, for a song. This collector did a lot of singing! His acquisitions, in any event are incorporated today in some of the old south’s pretentious homes. He owned many old homes here and as they were torn down --he managed to salvage much of the fencing , marble mantles, brass door knobs..etc.. CONDITION:Condition- Good condition for its age-Nice old patina- some rusting- There don't appear to be any cracks. I have not really cleaned it except to have scrub the years of soot off the front. I have several marble fireplace mantles that might fit with this handsome panel --- one is now on ebay and soon I'll post others. This is the kind of piece that designers search for to add a one-of-a-kind look to their special decor, and it would look great with a vintage mantle. I prefer local pickup MONTGOMERY ALABAMA but can assist with you truck freight pick up! Weight must be about 65 pounds and it could be shipped parcel post but packing it would need to be professionally done as even heavy iron can be fragile in shipping Visit my Ebay Shop for more antiques! Material: Iron, fireplace: fireback, royal coat of arms: early fireback
