Purchased at an auction that was selling items from The Churchill Funeral Home in Murray, Ky. Of course, the Funeral Home has changed over the years but the picture I have posted of the building is the way The J.H. Churchill & Bros. Undertaker Shop looked in 1886 and probably about the time this Wicker Coffin was used.
I understand these Wicker Basket Coffins were used to transport bodies from their death bed to the Funeral Home and also where some old sayings were derived from, such as, "Basket Case" and "Gone to H--- in a Hand Basket".
As you can see in the pictures, this Wicker Coffin is in remarkably good condition for it's age.
It has a leather covered board bottom inside and a sturdy exterior handle on each end to carry it with.
The lid is hinged on one side and and will attach to the bottom allowing it to open on one side or you can unfasten it and remove the lid. It may have originally had hinges on both sides as there are closures on both exterior sides.
The metal tag reads "Frigid Fluid Co. Chicago, Il."
It is app. 81" long or 83
including handles. The head end is app. 23" wide and the foot end is 21" wide. The bottom is 10" high and including the lid, it is 18" high.
I will be listing some Antique Casket Stands and Embalming Supplies, so check my other auctions for Mortuary Collectibles.
I took a lot of pictures, so pease enlarge and view them for further description.
