It begins in the grassy bowl of Fern Dale, but the river itself does not appear until the cavern of Lathkill Head is reached, and then only in a particularly wet season, for the Lathkill is one of those subterranean rivers which seem to go underground at the first opportunity, only to reappear at intervals downstream. In this case, the river only finally appears at the aptly named Bubbling Springs, a few yards downstream from Lathkill Lodge. The rocky upper parts of the dale give way to woods in the middle stretches and it is here that the curious traveller can find much evidence of the old lead mining, for Lathkill Dale has had several mines in its time, including the Mandale Mine whose ruined buildings can just be detected through the surrounding trees. The buildings are nineteenth-century but the mine itself goes back to the thirteenth century at least. The ancient bridge at Conkesbury, shown in the picture, spans the river where the old road from Bakewell to Ashbourne runs. Downstream from here the dale is much wider, presenting a soft, rural landscape.
