The object is raggedly broken on one end, probably by modern farm or construction equipment. The outer face bearing a design of a highly abstracted animal, possibly a bird of prey, and another abstract animal design in a smaller register, all rendered by a combination of low relief casting and chip carving. There are five regularly spaced projections from the edge of the plate. The undecorated reverse features one intact loop for attachment to the belt leather or fabric. Slightly dusty even sage green patina. 5.2 cm long (2.1 inches), 3.5 cm wide (1.4 inches). A superb example of Visigoth and Migration Period abstract art. • A large fragment from one end of a Visigothic (or Vandal) belt and buckle set. The outer surface is decorated with a small abstract swirl design of an animal, probably a bird of prey, contained within a large diamond-shaped double border, and a semi-circular floral design at the rounded end. The undecorated reverse features two complete loops for attachment to the belt leather or fabric. Dark green patina with earthen highlights. 3.55 cm wide (1.4 in.) x 5.0 cm long (2.0 in.). PROVENANCE: Both Ex Spanish private collection until 1989. Also, in a California private collection until April, 2003.
