History of Sovereign Edward VII Edward VII Gold Full Sovereigns were first struck in 1902 after a Royal proclamation was issued on December 10, 1901. Keeping the traditional image of Saint George slaying the Dragon, the coins were minted up to the King's death in 1910. The Sovereigns of this period were struck in the Royal Mint in London and in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth in Australia. Each coin bears a mintmark to indicate their origin. Almost half a century before, it had been decided that it would be easier to refine the gold and turn it into coins at source, rather than transport it to London, so the British government first awarded the task to Sydney which began issuing coins in 1855. Australian issued Sovereigns are the rarest and most sought after by collectors. The British Gold Sovereign is one of the most prestigious and credible gold bullion coins you can find in the market today. Trusted by investors, it is made of 22 carat crown gold and carries historic significance as well as aesthetic value. Holding a gold sovereign more than a century old conjures stories of the past in a magical way and the exquisite Edward VII 1902-1910 gold Sovereign is an example of such a unique experience. Historical Significance The Edwardian period was seen as a golden age for the upper class in Europe and America. King Edward VII, Albert Edward, was born on November 9, 1841 at Buckingham Palace. He was ascended to the throne on January 22, 1901 at the age of 59 and crowned on August 9, 1902 at Westminster Abbey. He died of pneumonia at Buckingham Palace in 1910 and was succeeded by his second son George V. During King Edward VII’s reign, he established an agreement in 1904 with Britain and France and signed the Entente Cordiale.
