While doing research to equip myself, I have learned much, including that there is a lot of fake silver out there. So I research each coin, note the specifications and values, and do the following tests, which helps to cull out virtually all counterfeits. - weight, dimension, and edge - magnetic, paramagnetic, diamagnetic - specific gravity Note that coins which are sealed in containers by a mint etc, cannot be tested as much, but usually I can due a rough measurement and test for magnetics. Note also, that all mints, in the specification for each type of coin they make have what is known as a 'Remedy Allowance' . This is a variance in acceptable weight and measure. For example, the american silver eagle weight variance at one ozt, can be +- .39 gr, and can go as high as .5 The old us silver dollar variance +- .97,or round to one gram. Measurement variance examples include, canadian dime and US silver dollar diameter variances +-.05mm All this does affect specific gravity testing. Those who test alot of coins, find Sp Gr variances up to 1.8% or.1888. Finally, note that coins clad in black ruthenium and 24k gold, will not test at the normal 10.49-10.54 for .999 silver. This is due to both of these elements have Sp Gravities different from silver. Therefore, I no longer do a specific gravity test on these coins unless I am unfamiliar with the coins' providence. TMI? Perhaps But I make no claim as to authenticity of these items, so I provide due diligence Thanks for looking
