You are looking at a ticket stub for the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers which took place on April 29, 1999 at the Great Western Forum in Los Angeles. In my estimation, the 1998-99 NBA season was the strangest in history - even stranger than the bubble.  In an effort to get as close to a full season in as possible due to a lockout, the season was shortened to a two-week preseason and a 50-game regular season.   Lockout ended January 20 and the first games were February 5.   Teams played four games a week for 12 1/2 weeks and the All-Star Game/Weekend was cancelled. Not only was the 1998 draft phenomenal, rookies had the bonus of playing fewer games (an 82 game schedule can wear rookies out), but the detraction of playing them one after another after another with travel in between. Ticket wise, different teams had different ways of dealing with the tickets they had issued to season ticket holders prior to the season.  For the Lakers, they reprinted the tickets with correct game numbers, dates, and opponents, so you will occasionally find the original pre-lockout season ticket books and tickets out there - if you don't know what you're looking at, you'll wonder how you are looking at a ticket for a game against Golden State in November of 1998 or a Lakers ticket in March 1999 against an opponent who was playing somewhere else on that date. The Lakers, who dominated for much of the season, had hit a rough run of games by going 2-6 in their previous eight which was amplified by the shortened schedule. Somehow, the media got a hold of past Lakers centers and asked them to opine on what was happening.  Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar called out Shaq for his lack of leadership and defensive intensity.  This was a huge deal locally.  This game was Shaq's response. Here is an account of the game and the criticism from a local news source: "The Los Angeles Lakers made a strong statement to silence their critics Thursday night. And perhaps to convince themselves that all is not lost. Shaquille O'Neal equaled his season-high with 38 points, and Robert Horry made six 3-pointers and scored a season-high 22 as the Lakers pummeled the Pacific Division-champion Portland Trail Blazers 108-89. The win was just the third in nine games for the Lakers (28-19), who snapped a three-game losing streak that matched their longest in over four years. They had lost their previous two games, at San Antonio and Houston, by a total of 49 points, prompting criticism from, among others, Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. "To me, criticism is very motivating, I like it personally," said O'Neal, who also had 12 rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocked shots in 39 minutes. "I got criticized this week by two great legends. Criticism is only going to help me. "I'm not where they are yet. I'm working hard to get there." Chamberlain and Abdul-Jabbar both pointed to O'Neal's deficiencies on defense, something that wasn't apparent in this game, by O'Neal or his team. "It was unbelievable, it was fun to watch, too," Lakers coach Kurt Rambis said. "We know what this team is capable of doing. It has a tremendous upside potential. It's a matter of getting their mindset together." With Houston losing to Dallas, the Lakers pulled within a half-game of the Rockets for fourth place in the Western Conference. The teams will almost surely meet in a first-round playoff series, with homecourt advantage still undecided. Horry, whose previous season-high was 17 points, missed only two shots from 3-point range and three overall. The Lakers made a season-high 11 shots from behind the 3-point line. "The first one I shot felt good, the second one I shot felt better," Horry said. "When you get that feelig, you keep shooting." The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Blazers (34-12), who fell a half-game behind Utah in the race for the NBA's best regular-season record and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs. "They are a very talented team, no one can argue that," said Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy, who coached the Lakers into the NBA Finals eight years ago, the last time they got that far. "If they didn't come out and play a good game, I would have been very surprised, having just lost three games in row. They played with a lot of emotion and they played very well. Kobe Bryant had 15 points, six rebounds and seven assists for the Lakers. Damon Stoudamire led the Blazers with 17 points, but had only three assists and scored just four points after the first quarter. Isaiah Rider added 15 points and Jimmy Jackson scored 14 for Portland. "We got outplayed, they were more physical, it's that simple," Rider said. "We didn't take them lightly at all. Anytime you're playing a team that has Shaquille O'Neal, you don't take that team lightly. They just outplayed us in every aspect of the game." The Lakers led 54-45 at halftime, and outscored the Blazers 21-11 to start the third quarter for a 19-point lead. Portland, hampered by 20 turnovers, scored the final seven points of the third quarter and the first three of the final period to draw within nine points, but Horry scored the next five points and the Blazers didn't threaten after that. O'Neal was blanked for the first 7:43 of the fourth quarter, but scored nine points in the next 1:40, including seven free throws in as many attempts. Overall, he was 14-of-17 from the foul line. Coming off a season-high 31-point performance, Stoudamire scored 13 in the first quarter as Portland took a 28-23 lead. O'Neal scored seven points and Horry made two straight 3-point shots to spark a 15-4 run early in the second period that put the Lakers ahead 39-35, and they were on top the rest of the way. Stoudamire was blanked in the second quarter, and the Blazers were outscored in the period 31-17. Portland beat the Lakers twice at the Rose Garden earlier this month the first time by 27 points. The teams play against next Wednesday night at the Forum in the regular-season finale, and playoffs begin three days after that." Please take a look at the scans for condition.
