On October 20, 1783, the Spanish brig of war, El Cazador (The Hunter), was dispatched to Veracruz, New Spain (present-day Mexico). Its mission: to load up with silver Spanish coins, predominantly 8 reales, commonly known as "Pieces of Eight," intended to revive the ailing regional economy in the New Orleans area. Departing on January 11, 1784, for New Orleans, El Cazador mysteriously vanished, never to be heard from again. This is an authentic coin salvaged from the shipwreck, and certified authentic by NGC.
