Volumes Two and Four only (of four)
Houghton, Osgood & Company, Boston, published between 1879-1880 .Green cloth hard covers with gilt lettering, all edges gilt, folios (9.5" x 12"), volume 2: 211-460 pages, volume 4: 671-928 pages, about 10 un-unumbered, tissue-protected full page engravings in each volume, plus many beautiful in-text illustrations and page decorations.
The contents of these volumes were published in parts, each of which consisted of 32 pages bound in paper wrappers. The series was conceived by the publishers to honor Longfellow and to please his public. Each issue contains original artwork from "the best artists of America," especially designed for this publication. The arrangement of the work, and the drawing and engraving were done under the supervision of the noted American engraver A.V.S. Anthony.
The 32 separate parts were custom-bound into 4 hard cloth-covered volumes without the original paper wrappers and with a title page and contents pages appearing only in the first volume.
Consequently, Volumes 2 and 4 do not have a title page, publishing information, and tables of contents which were only included in the missing first volume. Volume 4 has notes on the illustrations and on the text, as well as a full index for all 4 volumes.
The contents of Volume 2 include: The Blind Girl of Castle Cuille, The Song of Hiawatha, The Courtship of Miles Standish, Birds of Passage, Tales of a Wayside Inn. The contents of Volume 4 include: The New England Tragedies, Giles Corey of the Salem farms, St. John, Judas Maccabeus, The Masque of Pandora, The Hanging of the Crane, Morturi Salutamus, A Book of Sonnets, Keramos, Translations from Ovid, Michelangelo, Virgil etc, and more short works
The two volumes include about 300 full-page and in-text engravings. Some of the artists whose work is found in the two volumes are: F.T. Merrill, A.F. Bellows, J.W. Ehninger, P. Frenzeny, Harry Penn, Mary Hallock Foote, Sanford R. Gifford, A. Fredericks, Ernest W. Longfellow (the poets son), F.O.C. Darley, Worthington Whittredge, W.H. Gibson, B. Schell, Homer D. Martin, Charles S. Reinhart, Walter Shirlaw etc.
Condition: The covers of both volumes are in Very Good condition, with a little soil, slight edgewear and a little wear at the spine extremities; one of the volumes has two bumped corners. The contents are all intact and clean essentially Near Fine condition. The bindings are tight.

Shipping :
DOMESTIC Domestic Media Mail shipping, including Delivery Confirmation and Insurance, is free. This applies to any address in the US and Puerto Rico, as well as to APO addresses.
Media Mail, available only for domestic shipping, is trucked to its destination, and shipped by boat to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, On the average it takes 3 to 10 days to arrive, depending on the distance and the vagaries of the US Postal Service.
Shipments to Alaska, Hawaii, APO and other off-shore addresses take longer to arrive. During the pre-Christmas season, Media Mail is subject to delays. When filling out the Ebay Detailed Seller Ratings, please keep in mind that the sometime slow arrival is due to the performance of the Postal Service and not to any tardiness on the part of the seller.
For expedited domestic mailing, Priority Mail shipping can be arranged at an additional cost. For most books, we charge between two and nine dollars for this service, including delivery confirmation and insurance.
For heavy sets or high-value books, the charge may be higher.
INTERNATIONAL
For international shipping, we urge bidders to request quotes of shipping costs before bidding.
We will also specify international shipping options and prices after the conclusion of the auction. We will try to provide a range of options but buyers should be aware that all shipments are via air mail and shipping of heavy books can be expensive.
COMBINED SHIPPING
For international transactions, combined shipping of multiple lots can substantially reduce postage. This is especially the case for M-Bag shipments of up to 11 lbs and for multiple volumes that will fit into a single Priority Mail flat rate box. For the above options, the postage rate is fixed independently of the weight.
INSURANCE
All of our domestic shipments are fully insured.
Payment :
No credit cards except through PayPal. Paypal payments should be in US Dollars but Euros are also acceptable if prior agreement is obtained.
As of October 2008, Ebay is imposing the requirement that all payments be made via Paypal. We understand that this requirement may
